The Friends of Scandia Parks and Trails first presented proposals for a system of bike routes in
Scandia to the PRC several years ago. The PRC approved the routes and participated with
FSPT in placing bike route signage on one of the 4 routes we designated. For that route, the
Sand Lake Trail, the FSPT supplied all the signs and posts and the City of Scandia did the
installation.
We feel it is time to move forward and install signage on one more bike route, which will be
called the Bone Lake Route. With this cover letter is a summary of estimated costs for signs and
posts for this new route and a detailed description of the route including sign locations. No
signage will be placed on any County roads.
FSPT currently has about $1400 which we can provide for the costs of the signs and posts. Our
request is that the City of Scandia provide funding to cover the balance of the cost of the signs
and also again perform the installation.
Since it was established, we know the Sand Lake Route has had considerable usage and we
have received numerous favorable reports as to its bike -ability and beauty. Biking is an
important component of the current movement to promote fitness. The addition of the Bone
Lake Route will further demonstrate the desire for people of this community to enhance
opportunities for outdoor activity. People that bike appreciate signage on bike routes because
it creates awareness of the possible presence of bikers to others using the streets or roads.
Signage also, of course, is a helpful guide for bikers.
Note that no other signage is planned for the other two bike routes included in the original
FSPT proposal, the Big Marine Route and the Dala Route. These routes predominately follow
County roads, and the County does not permit bike route signs on County roads. Therefore, the
main guide for using these routes will be the large map at the Lions Shelter (and the proposed
map at the Community Center) and the small route maps the FSPT has printed and distributed.
These printed maps have been provided at the Lions Shelter and at the Community Center.
