Re: 2016 Summer Recreation Programs
Since 2007, the City has partnered with the Girl Scouts of the Minnesota and Wisconsin River
Valleys to offer summer recreation programs at Camp Lakamaga on Big Marine Lake. Program
revenues are shared between the City (20%) and River Valleys (80%) for all programs covered
by the agreement.
This past summer we offered twelve recreation programs.
The full day "Camp Adventurers" program at Camp Lakamaga was well attended. We offered
three different sessions and had a total of 36 registrations.
Two of the three half-day "Camp Explorers" programs at Camp Lakamaga did not receive any
registrations. The last session had 5 registrations.
We offered two sessions of the new "Ready, Set, GOAL" program and only received one
registration. The sessions were cancelled. The half-day program offered sports activities,
including volleyball, soccer, archery, swimming, and badminton, as well as a variation of dodge
ball.
There were four sessions of "Tennis Camp." Two of the sessions were combined for a total of 6
participants. Two of the sessions were cancelled due to lack of registrations.
I will be meeting with Camp Lakamaga staff in mid-October to discuss 2017 summer recreation
programming.
There were nurnerous ways the programs were prornoted, including:
A summer recreation brochure went out with the spring newsletter the first week in April to all
Scandia residents.
The program information was posted on the City's website and a news article was published.
An e-mail went out to all residents that signed up for parks and recreation e-mails.
Press releases were sent out to various newspapers, including the Country Messenger, The
Times, The Lowdown, Pioneer Press, and Star Tribune.
A featured article on the front page of Country Messenger.
Program information was provided to LATV.
A flyer was placed in the Forest Lake district -wide digital backpack.
A flyer was posted at the Community Center and provided at the information table.
Encouraged participants to share the information with their friends.
There were numerous postings on Facebook.
