Re: Fire Department Medical Call Response
Agenda Item #: 4.
Background:
At the August 27 special meeting, the Council asked staff to gather information from other fire
departments about which, if any, medical calls they respond to. Currently, Scandia Fire and
Rescue responds to all medical calls in our service area.
In 2012,the Fire Dept. responded to 215 incidents. This included 24 fire calls, 144 rescue and
medical calls, 7 hazardous conditions calls, 4 service calls, 31 good intent calls and 5 false
alarms. Chief Hinz is trying to obtain more specific data on the level of inedical calls they have
responded to in 2012. This information may be available at the meeting.
Issue:
Should the Scandia Fire and Rescue Department respond to all medical calls?
Proposal Details/Discussion:
Staff has obtained the following information about fire departments responding to medical calls:
• Forest Lake Fire: does not respond to any medical calls, 3 North Ambulances available
• Lake Elmo Fire: responds to level 1 medicals and when reyuested
• Chisago City Fire: does not respond to medicals, Lakes PD trained and carry oxygen and
defibs.
• Lindstrom Fire: Same as Chisago City.
Options:
1) Make no changes to Fire Department Medical Call Response
2) Request dispatch only call Scandia Fire and Rescue for certain medical calls such as level
one medicals or when requested
3) Request Scandia Fire and Rescue not be called out on medical calls
