Rich with History Visitors to Scandia often stop and view the Swedish Monument marking the location of the first log cabin built in 1850 and tour the Hay lake School Museum before heading up the road to Gammelgården of Scandia. Gammelgarden of Scandia was established in 1972 to preserve, present and promote Swedish immigrant heritage. Gammelgarde, meaning “old small farm” in Swedish, is an open-air museum featuring historic buildings dating back to the 1850s. Join us on a guided tour to catch a glimpse into the daily lives of early immigrants to Minnesota through a Swedish lens. Signature Events through the year include Midsommar Dag, Spelmansstämman(Swedish Fiddle Festival) and Luciadagen. Keep an eye out for barn quilts and Dala horses as you make your way through Scandia. To learn more about the 22 historical sites within the village center and greater Scandia, pick up a copy of the Scandia Heritage Trail brochure, from our museums and local shops. Scandia’s unique shops located in historical buildings, invite you to browse a delightful selection of local art, pottery, edibles, and artisan gifts. The St. Croix River marks the edge of the Scandia community and was designated as a Wild and Scenic Riverway by Congress in 1968. Big Marine Lake A public boat launch, offers boaters and anglers access to Big Marine Lake. Big Marine has the best large- mouth Bass fishing in the area. Northern Pike are abundant, but small. Walleye are present. Bluegills are average size and abundant as well as crappie. Crystal Spring Scientific and Natural Area The scenic value of Crystal Spring SNA is matched only by the high quality of the native plant communities that inhabit the 38-acrec site. Impressive steep cliffs line a winding seasonal cold water-stream. Community Center Playground & Tennis/ Pickleball Courts Located between the Community Center Building and the Public Works maintenance building is the Playground and Pickelball Couts. Picnic tables are available in the shade of the trees.
