Staff Report
Date of Meeting: 1/16/2024
For: Honorable Mayor and Council
From: Charles Fischer – Director of Public Works
Subject: PW - Staff Report
Roads/ROW
Public Works has continued ROW brush cutting over the past month as the light snow received has not
hindered the mowing process.
Tree trimming will begin once enough snow has accumulated hindering the brush cutting process.
Parks
The new rink boards are complete and flooding officially started on January 10th. The goal is to open as soon as
conditions allow and to continue flooding the rink up to the Vinterfest Hockey Tournament. The continued
flooding is to establish a deep base of ice to support the amount of play during the two-day event. Public
Works hopes to have at least a three week stretch of rink use once ice is established.
Sewer
Public Works coordinated lift station inspections through a local contractor. Upon completion of the
inspections to all seven main lift stations, a report was generated updating Public Works of any areas of
concern. Only one pump out to the fourteen inspected was reported to be of interest for replacement. The
pump will remain in operation until replaced in 2024.
Public Works is investigating pressure testing Lift Station #2 in the Bliss system for proper pump operation.
The pumps in this lift station have required more repair or replacement than the other lift stations and the
possibility of changing pump specifications can only happen if tested properly. Public Works plans to finish this
testing prior to spring.
Public Works has continued working with a contractor to provide costs in regards to inspecting for I/I within
the Bliss and A/E systems. Due to the scale and scope of work City staff would not be able to complete this
task and continue serving all other areas of the City. The potential project will consist of inspecting all of the
lines coming out of the home to the septic tank for cracks or breaks which allow I/I. We hope to have a better
projected cost soon. An update to this work will be presented as soon as a cost analysis is complete.
Equipment
Public Works has completed multiple rounds of review for the purchase of a new track loader(skid steer) and
class five dump truck(small dump body truck). A request for purchase of both vehicles will come to Council in
February. Fortunately, the two purchases are not as impacted from production delays as others and should
receive the new vehicles prior to the end of the year.
