Re: Hire Ice Rink Maintenance Worker
Background:
At the October meeting, the Council gave approval to staff to advertise and interview for the Ice Rink
Maintenance Worker position for the 2013-2014 season. Applications were accepted until November 1,
2013 and staff completed the interview process on November 8,2013.
Issue:
Who should be hired for the 2013-2014 season as an ice rink maintenance worker?
Proposal Details:
Two applications were received by deadline. The Public Works Director and I interviewed both
applicants on November 8,2013.
Staff is recommending Forrest Tibbetts be hired as the ice rink maintenance worker for the 2013-2014
season at an hourly rate of$11.75.Tibbetts has been working in the City parks for the last two summers.
In addition he has previous experience maintaining an ice rink at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center
in Stillwater. Tibbetts not only has experience operating a zamboni but also an edger and blower used in
clearing the ice. He also has general experience in repairing and maintaining ice, boards, nets and related
equipment.
Fiscal Impact:
In October the Council approved advertising the position at a rate of$10-12/hour,similar to other
seasonal maintenance positions. The proposed$l 1.75/hour is a significant reduction from last year's rate
of$13.38/hour. Since the parks seasonal personnel budget is proposed to remain the same as this year, the
reduced rate will allow for mare hours of maintenance which will be beneficial given the added events for
V interfest.
Options:
1) Hire Tibbetts for the 2013-2014 season at a rate of$l 1.75/hr
2) Hire another applicant or approve a different rate of pay
3) Do not fill the positions.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
