03. Midco Letter of Support Staff Report
Date of Meeting: February 7, 2024
For: Honorable Mayor and Council
From: Kyle Morell, City Administrator
Subject: Letter of Support for Midco Line Extension Grant Application
Background:
The City has been approached about offering a letter of support for an upcoming Midco grant
application to the Minnesota DEED’s Line Extension Program. The application will focus on the
area around Mayberry Trail and 205th St. N. and serve 70 addresses. The Line Extension
Program applications do not require a local match, and Midco is not asking for local funding to
help with this application. A draft letter of support is attached for review.

To The Office of Broadband Development,
The City of Scandia is in support of the State of Minnesota Line Extension Program
Grant application being submitted by Midcontinent Communications (Midco) to expand
broadband access to more residents in Scandia.
This area of our community has a demonstrated need for upgraded broadband service, as
currently, limited options do not provide the speeds and reliability required for current
uses. Midco’s proposal to deploy fiber broadband infrastructure to this area will be
beneficial to the citizens, businesses, and institutions.
As the Scandia City Council, we are confident in Midco’s financial and managerial
capability to ensure adequate project administration and customer service. We are also
confident that Midco’s proposed project aligns with the broadband deployment goals of
the State of Minnesota. We have appreciated the opportunity to partner with Midco on
this project and are excited for the possibility of broadband expansion in our community.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
Sincerely,
Christine Maefsky
Mayor
City of Scandia
