5.b Public Works Staff ReportSCANDIA Staff Report Date of Meeting: 3/4/2024 For: PRC From: Charles Fischer — Director of Public Works Subject: Staff Report Tennis/Pickleball Update: Work has continued preparing plans and specifications for the court project through the City Engineer. Site survey and soil samples will be used to prepare specifications for each site. Council approved to have both sites placed in the bid package with the option to choose, after bidding, to improve one or both sites. More detail will be made available after survey and soils sample analysis is complete. Rink Advertisements: Public Works has been developing a method to install the rink advertisements without damaging or affecting the integrity of the new paneling and what fastener system will be safe to use. The previous advertisements were simply screwed into the previous boards which were backed by a 3/" plywood surface behind the white poly facing. The new material to adhere advertisements to is much thinner fiberglass, not allowing much for holding depth. Typical indoor rinks either use adhesive backed vinyl ads or have an insert system built into the boards. Some rinks also have specific panels made with advertisements adhered professionally. These indoor options will not hold up in an outdoor rink as they are not UV rated or possibly be adversely affected by extreme cold temperatures. The current ad panels are also showing signs of early wear and tear in just one year with cracking or flaking of the printed portion on the back of the panel meant to protect the ad. With an outdoor system, the abuse from pucks, and UV rays there are limited options available in respects to longevity of the advertisement; specifically for a three-year commitment if chosen by the business desiring to advertise.
