Re: Updated Job Description, FT Maintenance Worker
Background:
In July, the Council approved a new title of Public Works Director, formerly the Maintenance
Superintendent. No other duties or responsibilities were changed for the position. For
consistency, other jobs descriptions should be updated to reflect the change in title. Staff is
proposing to do this as positions are hired. Last month the Council approved the changes to the
Ice Rink Maintenance and Seasonal, On-Call Snow Removal PT Maintenance Worker
descriptions.
Prior to advertising for a new FT Maintenance Worker, staff is requesting that job description be
updated.
Issue:
Should the job description for the FT Maintenance Worker be updated to reflect they report to
the Director of Public Works and take on duties related to utilities?
Proposal Details:
Included in your packet is a redlined version of the proposed changes for the position.
The reporting section was changed to reflect the new title for the Public Works Director.
The Primary objective was just reworded to be more succinct.
The changes to the essential functions are meant to make things more succinct and also make
reference to duties related to the maintenance and operation of the community sewage systems
and the City's involvement in collecting data and monitoring water flow on the Uptown System.
After reviewing similar job descriptions in other communities, the knowledge, skills and abilities
section was also updated to include references to sewer related items and some more general
requirements of the position.
One small change is proposed for examples of performance criteria. Again the change is aimed
at including the utility components of the position.
Lastly, the minimum qualifications section was extended to include water and wastewater
licensing requirements. The Council should review and discuss the proposed timeline for
obtaining licensure. Staff believes these are reasonable given our experience with available
classes and certification opportunities. The requirements for a Class A drivers license have not
been changed. The Council should discuss if they would like to allow some time frame for an
employee to obtain this license as well. For example, we could require a Class B license and the
ability to obtain a Class A license within six months.
Fiscal Impact:

Options:
1) Approve the proposed job description updates
2) Amend and then approve the new job description
3) Do not adopt new job descriptions
