Action Requested: Approve the hiring of Greg VanDerSchaegen for the Seasonal Parks and
Grounds Maintenance position.

Background: • Mr. VanDerSchaegen filled this position for the past three years and has
proved to be a capable and reliable worker. Staff is recommending
hiring him again for the 2012 season.
• His work schedule would typically be three to four days per week,with
the exact days and hours to be determined by the Maintenance
Superintendent depending upon work demands and weather conditions.
• The 2012 pay rate for the position has been set at $10.00 to $12.25 per
hour. The budget is sufficient to cover the $12.25 pay rate (an increase
of 2% for this employee) for up to 32 work weeks at 3 days per week, or
24 weeks at 4 days per week (96 8-hour work days.) The position will
terminate at the end of the grounds maintenance season.
Recommendation: Approve the hiring of Greg VanDerSchaegen for the Seasonal Parks and
Grounds Maintenance position, effective April 18, 2012 at the pay rate of
$12.25 per hour.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: PARKS AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER,
TEMPORARY SEASONAL
STATUS: Temporary seasonal (24 to 40 hours/week, up to 67 work
days) position
Normal working hours, per personnel policy
Subject to emergency call-out or off-hour work assignments

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Under direction of full-time maintenance staff, perform a
wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks necessary to the seasonal maintenance
of grounds, equipment and buildings at city parks and municipal buildings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs landscaping functions such as mowing turf and trimming around trees,
fences, buildings and paved areas.
2. Operates and performs simple maintenance on equipment such as riding or
walk-behind lawn mowers and weed whips.
3. Removes litter and garbage and handles recyclables.
P 4. Prepares facilities for recreational use, such as dragging ball fields.
5. Assists with other maintenance activities such as painting, cleaning, or setting up
and taking down equipment.
6. Attend safety meetings and other training as required.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to operate assigned equipment.
2. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
3. Ability to do some lifting, bending, climbing, reaching, overhead pushing and
pulling.
4. Agility to perform job responsibilities outdoors in climatic extremes

EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:
1. Mowing and trimming are completed on a weekly basis, more or less frequently if
weather conditions dictate.
2. Facilities and equipment are maintained in a neat, clean and orderly manner at
all times.
3. Equipment is utilized appropriately, effectively and safely.
4. Communicates with staff and citizens in a polite and courteous manner.
5. Keeps supervisor informed of all significant matters he/she must know to perform
his/her responsibilities effectively.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
2. Valid class "D" driver's license and good driving record.
3. Must be able to physically perform functions of the position including lifting or
moving up to 50 pounds occasionally.
4. Previous experience with grounds maintenance is desirable.
