Adjournment The Scandia Economic Development Authority met in the Board Room at the Scandia Community Center on Monday, November 18, 2014 beginning at 6:46pm. Commissioners Present: Tom Triplett, Greg Isaacson, Dan Lee, Sally Swanson, and Bruce Swenson. Staff Present: Kristina Handt. The meeting was called to order at 6:46pm by Triplett. Motion by Lee, seconded by Swenson to approve the October 14, 2014 minutes. Motion carried. Motion by Lee, to amend the agenda to add Expansion of the EDA and then approve the agenda. Motion carried. No one was present for the public forum. Chris Harms and Sue Rodjso addressed the EDA in earlier business meetings so they were not present at this meeting. The commissioners discussed Small Business Saturday. Swanson volunteered to bring a box of bags and promotional items to Crabtrees. Scandia Market and Mercantile and Countryside Arts had already registered on their own. Handt passed around a press release from the EDA promoting Small Business Saturday that was sent to the papers. Lee suggested expanding the EDA to 7 members to Swanson could remain after her Council term ended. Also to involve another business person since we had a great response to our business meetings. Motion by Triplett, seconded by Lee to recommend to the City Council that the EDA be expanded to 7 members pending the ability to add two citizen members. Motion carried. Commissioner Reports: Commissioners commented on the two meetings with businesses and thought they went well. Swenson asked about the focus for next year. Commissioners wanted to focus on affordable housing. More will be discussed after the joint meeting with the Planning Commission. Executive Director Report: Handt had breakfast with the new Forest Lake Area Chamber Director, Ted Blank. He attended the business meetings and is interested in getting more Scandia businesses involved in a regular meeting in Scandia to discuss business issues. The next meeting will be Monday, December 8, 2014 at 7:OOpm. Motion by Lee, seconded by Swanson to adjourn. Motion carried. Minn. - Midcontinent Communications plans to offer faster fiber optic Internet service in the communities it serves in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota - Minnesota Public Radio News reports the faster Internet will be available to 600,000 homes and 55,000 businesses in the region by the end of 2017. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota -based company said Monday the gigabit service will be 35 times faster than the national average Internet speed. Midcontinent has service centers in nine Minnesota communities - Bemidji; Cambridge, Cold Spring, Fairmont, Forest Lake, International Falls, Moorhead, St. Joseph and Wabasha - and provides telecommunication services to areas surrounding each location. Midcontinent says it will invest $75 million to bring the gigabit service to the communities it serves.
