Hemslojden is hand crafting. This year we are focusing on tools to be used primarily by women for making cloth for clothes etc. The production of tools to make cloth from wool or linen became the task of the men. Often the creating of the tool became an opportunity for creativity and artistic expression as well as functionality. In the society, social significance for these tools in the rituals of the community developed also. Scutching knives, shuttles and mangles especially took on significance as betrothal gifts. Lovingly made and embellished by young men and presented to the young girl of their dreams. When accepted, the community celebrated the impending marriage. As the couple moved/migrated, these tools went too ... both as important tools, but with memories attached to them. Sometimes too, if the offered tool was rejected, the community demanded that the rejected tool be displayed on the door of the young man who made it! Hence, the saying" Beware of the man with too many mangles/ shuttles/ scutching knives!" Weaving looms and quilting frames, both large and bulky, became wedding gifts and passed through generations. Again, the skill and artistic ability of the maker was displayed as well as the generous gift of time to make the items. Along with spinning wheels, these items were made to be disassembled for packing and transport to new locations of the owner .... even America! Linen, produced from flax, is a material that is strong, wicks away moisture, is easy to wash and can be intricately woven or braided. The thread can range from very course or ultra fine. Uses include clothing, medical bandages, funeral wrappings, tenting material, sails, bedding, backing for Dala paintings, paper and table linens. Short fibers create "Tow" linen, course in texture and cheaper in price. Wool, created from the fur of live animals, results in warm garments and household items. After processing, the yarn can be woven, knitted or crocheted. Often the items can shed water too, based on the processing methods and tightness of weave. Size: The actual finished size will be 4" with 1/Z" of the circle's outer edges wrapping around the button edge.
