09.b1 Fire-PW Storage Container Purchase

Re: Storage Container
Background:
The Fire and Public Works Departments are requesting to purchase two shipping containers for storage.
The Fire Department plans to move most of our training props and items that are used on a limited basis from
inside the fire station to the storage container. Currently there are many items that are stored in the building and
are constantly being moved as there is not a place to store them permanently. Public Works also has items that
are stored in the cold storage building and utilizing the container will make those items more readily available.
They would also be able to store some of the equipment attachments that are currently stored outside and not
protected from the elements.
The containers would be placed behind the salt storage building so as to not be visible from the road.
There are two available options, new or used. New containers are tan in color do not have blemishes. Used
containers are in good condition but may have visual imperfections and not look the same.
Since the containers are planned to be placed behind the salt shed and not visible from the road used
would be the most cost-effective option.
Issue:
Should the city council approve the purchase of two 20-foot containers for storage at the Fire/Public Works
building?
Proposal Details:
Purchase two 20-foot shipping containers to be placed behind the salt storage shed. One container would
be used by the Fire Department and one to be used by Public Works.
Fiscal Impact:
If we purchase two used containers the total would be $5,000 or we could purchase new for a cost of
$7,200. The funds would come out of both the Fire & Public Works general budgets.
Options:
(1) Approve purchase of two used containers for storage.
(2) Approve purchase of two new containers for storage.
(3) Decline the purchase of two shipping containers.
Recommendation:
Option (1).
