Professional sports teams aren’t the only ones interested in using analytics: The
Sheriff’s Office has recently added CrimeView Analytics to its crime-fighting arsenal.
This powerful software program, which is now available to Washington County law
enforcement agencies, pulls data from the computer-aided dispatch and the law
enforcement records management system and provides information that can create
reports and charts to spot trends and understand crime patterns — even identifying
frequent contacts and locations. Heat maps generated by CrimeView can help
visualize these incidents, using color gradients to quickly show where clusters of
incidents, traffic stops, citations, and arrests are happening countywide, in
individyak cities or in specific neighborhoods within those cities. As the system is
ramping up, the focus is on equipping the Community Impact Unit with the new
tools first, to help with upcoming saturation efforts. “We expect this data to show
us patterns that will help us solve more cases and prevent more crime by giving us
new ways to strategize and prioritize,” said Chief Deputy Doug Anschutz.
And while CrimeView Analytics is available only to law enforcement, Washington
County residents can view incidents and receive alerts in a sister program that was
rolled out last year, called CrimeMapping.com. We encourage city officials to check
it out and to let their residents know about it.
