6.a Disc GolfFrom: Terry Gorham < > Sent: Friday, May 16, 2025 6:10 PM To: Fran Miron <Fran.Miron@washingtoncountymn.gov> Cc: 'Kyle Morel I' <k.morell@ci.scandia.mn.us> Subject: Request - Big Marine Park Reserve Plan - Disc Golf Greetings Commissioner Miron — I am writing today on behalf of the Scandia Parks and Recreation Committee. During our regular discussions of our Scandia parks plans and the amenities that we can offer, we have listened to several requests for a disc golf course in the area. There is a small but growing number of local Scandia residents enjoying the activity. We were interested in building a disc golf course on one of the Scandia park properties. Upon review with a designer of these courses, we learned that our park system doesn't have the acreage or appropriate terrain for disc golf. I enjoyed the informative meeting on April 10 to review the expansion plans for the Big Marine Park Reserve. I had the opportunity to ask if disc golf was in the plan, to which the presenter said none were included in the current plan for the park. He did emphasize that plans were still in the development stages. Given the large area of the park (current and the expansion) we would like to ask if some space could be built into the plan for disc golf. How, and to whom, should we reach out to the Big Marine Park Reserve planner(s) and make a formal request to propose this amenity be added to the plan for the regional park? What additional information could we provide for such a request? Appreciate your guidance. Thank you! Terry Gorham Scandia Parks and Recreation Committee Chair From: Fran Miron <Fran. I have copied our Public Works Director and Parks Director on this email and both can/should be involved in discussions related to this idea. I am not familiar with this sport, but am interested in learning more and being engaged in this discussion. We will need to evaluate how this activity might fit into the master park plan which has been adopted and has community support. Supporters of pickle ball have also reached out with support for this sport as well. A comprehensive look at potential activities and their impacts should be considered. I'm confident this email will help get the discussion moving. Thanks for reaching out! As mentioned at the meeting, currently the long- range plan for the park does not call for disc golf and a new course isn't in the current county 5-year CIP. That being said, I'd be happy to find a time to discuss recreation opportunities at Big Marine Park Reserve, particularly disc golf, and hear from you or other residents interested in the opportunity. I'm open next Thursday (5/29) or Friday (5/30). Would you have any availability to meet to discuss? We could either do a virtual meeting or an in -person meeting. I'm including A Williams, our parks manager, who oversees recreational amenities within the park system. Thanks again for reaching out and I'll look forward to hearing from you.
