Summer officially begins June 20, and Minnesotans are ready to hit the water! Whether
it’s fishing, swimming, paddling, or boating on one of Washington County’s 251 lakes,
there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy time outdoors.
While it’s always a good idea for everyone to wear a life jacket when boating, did you
know that Minnesota law requires all children under the age of 10 to wear one? Also,
those using a canoe or kayak are required to wear a life jacket while on the water.
The same law applies to operators of personal watercraft (PWCs), such as Jet Skis.
One of the most important reasons to wear a life jacket is the cold shock response.
This reflex occurs when your body is suddenly exposed to cold water, typically below
70°F. It triggers several automatic physiological reactions, including the gasp reflex,
hyperventilation, vasoconstriction (which leads to a loss of dexterity), and can
overwhelm even the strongest swimmers, increasing the risk of drowning.
The Sheriff’s Office Water, Parks, and Trails Unit will be out too, promoting outdoor
safety. Licensed deputies and specially trained reserves patrol rivers, lakes, and parks
to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. Many of them will tell you that
patrolling the water or a beautiful park is one of the best jobs around!

At 10:13am on May 2, a deputy arrived at a business after staff
reported illegal dumping there. Employees told the deputy they had
video of a man pulling up in a black compact SUV and then dumping
empty beer bottles and boxes in the business’s trash. The man
didn’t buy gas, and the store was closed at the time, so he wouldn’t
have been considered a customer. Employees said this has been an
ongoing issue with the same person, and they were able to provide
a license plate number. Staff said they would like the deputy to
warn the man that if he is caught on video again, he will be
trespassed and possibly cited for illegal dumping. The deputy went
to the address associated with the license plate, but no one was
home. The deputy left a card with request to call back and will
attempt follow-up to explain the complaint.

This month, we take a moment to honor Deputy Chris
Majeski and K9 partner Jake (top photo), who will retire
this summer. These two have been partners for nearly
10 years as part of WCSO’s nationally top-ranked K9
team. Retirement means Jake will now get to live the
family life with the Majeskis, full of treats, affection and
fun. We thank him and Deputy Majeski for their
excellent work and special partnership. Details of K9
Jake’s retirement will be available soon.
While it’s hard to say goodbye, we’re also happy to
welcome new K9 Mack officially to the team. After four
months of training with Deputy Ross Peterson,
graduation was May 22. We look forward to seeing how
they work together as they serve our communities.
Finally, don’t forget that Saturday, June 14, is National
Get Outdoors Day, when all U.S. state parks are free to
visit. Closer to home and year-round, Washington
County offers free access to all eight of its beautiful
county parks on the first Tuesday of each month, with
upcoming summer dates on June 3, July 1, Aug. 5 and
Sept. 2. Have fun out there, and most importantly,
please be safe!
