Subject: Request for Planning and Development of a Disc Golf Course at Big Marine Park
Reserve
Dear Mr. McKinney -
On behalf of the Scandia Parks and Recreation Committee, we wish to extend our warm
regards and express our appreciation for your ongoing commitment to enhancing
recreational opportunities in Washington County. The recent expansion of Big Marine Park
Reserve offers a unique and exciting opportunity to further enrich the park’s amenities for
residents and visitors alike.
Thank you for attending the July 7, 2025, Scandia Parks and Recreation Committee
meeting. At that meeting, we explained that Scandia’s parks system lacks adequate
acreage and terrain suitable for disc golf. Per your recommendation, we are writing to
formally request the initiation of a planning process to create a disc golf course within the
newly expanded areas of Big Marine Park Reserve. Disc golf has rapidly grown in popularity
throughout Minnesota, offering an accessible, family-friendly, and environmentally
conscious form of outdoor recreation that appeals to a wide range of ages and abilities.
Big Marine Park Reserve, with its scenic landscapes, mature woodlands, and open
meadows, would provide an ideal setting for a thoughtfully designed disc golf course. Such
an addition would not only serve the current community but would also attract disc golf
enthusiasts from neighboring areas, further establishing the park as a premier destination
for outdoor activities in the region.
We respectfully request the following:
• An assessment of suitable locations within the newly expanded park boundaries for
a disc golf course layout, considering environmental preservation and multi-use
compatibility.
• Development of a detailed plan, including preliminary designs, cost estimates, and
potential funding sources or partnerships.
• Opportunities for public input, including community meetings or surveys, to ensure
the course meets local needs and expectations.
The Scandia Parks and Recreation Committee welcomes the opportunity to assist in this
endeavor, whether through community engagement, promotion, or logistical support. We
believe that a collaboration between our committee and Washington County Parks could
lead to the successful realization of this project.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration of this proposal. We look forward to
your response and to collaborating on this exciting new addition to Big Marine Park
Reserve.
Respectfully, on behalf of our committee,
Terry Gorham
