6.f REquest to start Fire Department Recruitment1 Neil Soltis From:Mike Hinz <mike.hinz@scandiafire.com> Sent:Wednesday, February 15, 2017 8:55 AM To:Neil Soltis Subject:New FF's Hi Neil, We need to have a request on the council agenda to start the process of taking on new recruits. We would like to make announcements at the fire ball. Background We currently have 24 firefighters. We feel that a reasonable staffing level would be 30 (this number accounts for the fact that we are volunteers and not everyone is available all the time). It takes about 5 years of training and experience to establish a qualified replacement firefighter. We would like approval to hire up to 6 new staff. We usually have 1 or 2 that drop out. So we will be recruiting every year for the next few years. Tentative time line: -Advertise that we have openings (which we have started) through April 10th. -Review the applications the week of April 10th (Mike Hinz, Ian Skarja, Bill Havener) -First interviews -April 19-21 (Mike Hinz, Bill Havener, Ian Skarja & Neil Soltis) -Physical testing April 29th ( our make-up drill). -Second interview May 5th (if needed) -City Council approval of names May 16th (make offer as soon as possible) -Week of May 22rd Doctor physicals & Drug testing (Osceola Hospital) -May 27th have meeting with the recruits & their families. this meeting lest the family know what is involved & the time commitment. -New member start first week of June Fiscal Impact: The fiscal impact will be about $1,000 per person, with a total of $6,000 in the first 5 years to achieve full credentials Thank you, Mike Hinz Chief, Scandia Fire & Rescue Station 651-433-4383 Cell 651-303-4611
