Reducing crime and improving quality of life is a team effort, and a well-informed
citizenry plays an important role. Washington County offers residents tools to help
them be proactive in staying informed and in keeping their families and homes safe.
First, county residents can sign up for CodeRED, which sends emergency and community updates
on evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, police activity, missing persons and more via phone, text,
email or app. The Sheriff’s Office encourages all residents to sign up for this important free service
— just scan the QR code above or text WASHINGTONMN to 99411.
Another free tool is CrimeMapping.com, an online database available for any county resident.
This user-friendly web-based program offers a visual representation of incidents within our
jurisdiction and allows for easy access to incident data, including incident type, date, time,
location and case numbers, for up to 180 days. It includes these types of incidents: arson, assault,
burglary, disturbing the peace, drugs/alcohol violations, DWI, fraud, homicide, motor vehicle
theft, robbery, theft/larceny, vandalism, vehicle break-in/theft and weapons offenses.
Finally — and perhaps most importantly — don’t forget: If you see something, say something.
Our dedicated team of telecommunicators, deputies, and other first responders are here for you
24/7. When in doubt, call 911 — and not just for emergencies. When you call, our
telecommunicators receive valuable information through advanced technology that supports a
faster, more informed response. The same professionals who answer emergency calls also
manage non-emergency lines, so you’re not bothering them by calling 911. They’ll simply ask if
your situation is an emergency. If it’s not, they may place you on hold briefly, but they’ll make
sure you get the help or guidance you need as soon as possible.
The most important thing is to report what you see when it’s happening. We would much rather
respond to a call and find nothing than miss the chance to stop a crime or help someone in need.

At 11:47pm on Oct. 4, deputies arrived at a residence after a caller
reported a suspicious person at the door. The caller had been speaking
to the person, who appeared to be in a state of distress, through a
security system. The caller’s description of the person matched that of a
person possibly involved in an earlier domestic dispute in Wisconsin, and
the man’s first name matched that incident. Upon arrival, deputies
approached the man ands could see multiple small cuts and scratches all
over his legs, as well as bruised and bleeding feet. It appeared that he had
swum across the St. Croix River and had been trekking through the woods
for some time. The man told deputies he was trying to get to Stillwater
after swimming from St. Croix Landing. He asked to sit in the back of the
squad, where he spoke to a St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office deputy and
provided a statement regarding the domestic incident. WCSO deputies
were advised of misdemeanor charges from the St. Croix County as well
|as possible charges coming from New Richmond Police. The man
requested to be taken to a hospital to receive treatment while awaiting
extradition and charges.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was proud to attend the opening ceremony
of this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics (LETR) conference,
hosted Oct. 16-18 in Minneapolis. We were inspired by the powerful stories shared by
Special Olympics athletes and by the global partnership between law enforcement
and the Special Olympics community. A special highlight was supporting our very own
Sgt. Matt O’Hara in his role as Minnesota State Director of LETR. His dedication to
supporting and fundraising for Special Olympics athletes is truly remarkable.
“The Law Enforcement Torch Run has given me more than I could ever give back,”
says Sgt. O’Hara on the Special Olympics Minnesota website. “The opportunities,
friendships and experiences I have been a part of have created a lasting impact on my
life. The SOMN athletes I interact with on a regular basis have taught me so much
about who I am and improved my life personally and professionally in a way I didn’t
know I’d need.”
Over the past 40 years, LETR has raised more than $1 billion nationally to support these athletes —
and the impact continues to grow. In Minnesota alone, that number is $58 million raised for our in-

We’d also like to congratulate Sgt. O’Hara on his recent promotion. In his 18 years as a Washington
County deputy, he has served as a Patrol deputy; a Water, Parks and Trails deputy; a Coordinated
Response Team detective; field training officer; honor guard member; SWAT Tech team lead; Mobile
Field Force member; and Emergency Vehicle Operation Course instructor. In his new assignment, he
will be assigned to the Patrol division. We value his experience and commitment, on the job and off!
