Recently, the Washington County Sheriff’s
Office K9 Unit attended the United States
Police Canine Association national patrol dog
trials in Bradenton, Fla. They joined 69 other
K9 teams from around the country in this
annual competition. As they have in past years,
WCSO’s K9 Unit performed at an excellent level,
bringing home several awards. These include:
2nd place team — Pictured from left are

Peters with K9 Red, and Deputy Josh Liebenow
with K9 Viking.
Deputy Brandon Yetter — 2nd place overall

recovery.
Deputy Nate Thienes — 5th place overall and 1st place in criminal apprehension.
Deputy Dave Peters — 19th place overall.

At 4:23pm on Nov. 11, a deputy spoke with a caller reporting an unknown
person entering a house for which the caller is a caretaker. The caller
wasn’t sure who the person was or if the person had any legitimate link to
the property and wanted law enforcement to be aware of the situation
while the caller reviewed security video and inventoried the house. On Nov.
12 at 3:41pm, deputies arrived at the address after the caretaker called to
report the suspect had returned in a black pickup truck and parked in front
of the house. The caretaker confronted the suspect, who claimed he had
bought the house. Knowing this was false, the caretaker told him to leave.
Before the suspect complied, the caretaker took a photo of the truck’s
license plate. Deputies were able to identify the truck’s registered owner,
and through this plus social media the suspect’s identity was confirmed. A
deputy contacted the property owner, who was not scheduled to return for
several days. The owner requested the suspect be trespassed from the
property. Deputies then attempted to contact the suspect but were unable
to do so. Deputies spoke to the suspect’s estranged wife, who advised he
had recently been having mental health problems and had left a treatment
program. An alert on the suspect and the truck was issued to all deputies
working in the area (WC25060678).

This month I’m proud to tell you about the North Starrys, a hockey team made up of
first responders including Sheriff’s Office staff as well as police officers, firefighters
and EMS from departments throughout Washington County. We’re gearing up to join
other teams from around the state at the 8th annual Big Bear Hockey Classic in April.
This event began as a way to honor Brooklyn Park Officer Andy “Big Bear” Suerth,
who died suddenly in 2017. The first Big Bear Hockey Classic was held in 2019, and
to date the event has raised $92,000 for first-responders and their families in need
of financial support as they face medical battles or deal with family loss.
Our own Deputy Chris Majeski has been chosen as the beneficiary of the 2026 Big Bear
Hockey Classic. Deputy Majeski continues to battle metastatic oropharynx, or throat
cancer. This condition is considered incurable but can be treated with various options
to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Deputy Majeski, who has been with
Washington County Sheriff’s Office since 2003 in various roles — including stints as
the Scandia contract deputy, a K9 handler and a dive team member — continues to work on patrol
as a field training officer despite his health challenges. We greatly admire his determination and
dedication, as well as the example he sets for his fellow deputies.
Besides the Big Bear tournament, the North Starrys also play non-competitive pick-up games
throughout Washington County, typically bi-weekly. If you’re a first responder or know one who
