possible?
A Tale of Two Thoughts:
Thought
# 1: MPR
broadcast Oct. 2016. How the
Minnesota
Cuvuna
Range (Crosbv) Became Off
-Road
Cycling Destination. They used what they had -iron ore
pits —and hills -and enhanced it with mountain bike
trails. A potential benefit to bikers and businesses.
Thought # 2: Listened to candidates for offices in Scandia
Nov. 2016. Wanting to keep Scandia rural, natural and
unique (use what we have) yet attract and keep
businesses.
Recalled broadcast about Crosby
Began thinking!! Lots of cyclists come through our
town and maybe there is an opportunity here for
more business development.
Next step was to ask cyclists what they needed and
what did Scandia offer?
Mayor —Elect Maefsky was contacted and she said OK
to "reach out to them" -the cyclists.
Member of Twin City Club.
rides through Scandia.
Wrote to 8 "leads" who lead
There are 10 rides that come through Scandia and here
are their names.
• New Scandia Township Tour
• Summer Solstice Metric Century
• Paper Man
• An Apple a Day
• Tin Man
• Sunday Sunrise Solitude
• Aluminum Man
• Straw Man
• Chain, Chain, Chain of Fools
• You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Loose Wheel
You have the questions in your packet.
You also have results of survey. Here are some selected
responses:
• Gathering place for cyclists
Market
• Liked packaged sandwiches.
is in front of our Scandia
• Water and bathroom facilities are most important
"needs"
• Most cyclist carry a credit card
• Suggestions for bike fix -it station or bike shop with
mechanic.
• Maps
• B&B options.
• Need bike racks.
• More snacks etc- etc.
Needed more persons on exploratory team!
Four persons were identified and one joined the
team, Marlys Johnson.
Need to schedule a Visit to Crosby:
How did they do it?
Feb 21, Marlys and Janie drove to Crosby.
Met with Owner of bike store, Chamber of
Commerce rep and owner of Cafe. (Two are also on
economic development committee)
Janie and Marlys knew that they did not represent
Scandia in any formal or appointed role. Just interested
citizens asking questions
What we learned:
1. Work with other agencies to reach your goals
[Crosby worked with DNR to create Mountain bike Trails
in the old Mine Pits.]
2.Work with target groups to enhance your vision. [Crosby
worked with Mountain Bike Association and the Chamber
to create highly desirable paved trails.]
3. Visit other cities or organizations to explore
their processes. [Crosby visited Cable WI to hear
of their success in Mountain Bike trails. Came
back "pumped:']
4. Be willing to be creative and do the hard work. [Got
the Minnesota Design Team to come to their town and
designed the plaza.]
5. Be ready to feel discouraged. Keep your vision in front
of you. [Many residents thought the mines would come
back and "we don't need all this bike stuff."]
6.
There are 8
new businesses in
town in
past 3 years.
In
past 10
years
5
businesses
have
left
town.
New businesses — include:
Red Raven Bike Restaurant
Mixed company cafe
Spaulding bar added sleeping rooms above bar
2 new lawyers in law firm
Brewery
Businesses that left town in past 10 years:
Lumber Store
Hardware Store
Dentist
What NOT to do:
Create a large business event with all kinds of
expectations —and then nothing happens for 3 years.

Crosby said: Do the following !!
1) Create a 501 c 3
2) Find a stream of funding
3) Get buy -in from people who will use it
4) Create a signature event
Goal: To create a bike environment that results in
increased cyclist traffic to Scandia; having potential for
economic impact as bike destination.
Weare asking the Council for support for this endeavor
We need a few more enthused members on team
Our job is to create awareness of Scandia as bike
Destination. We would like "demand" to drive our
efforts.
We need a "home" Ad hoc EDA? Ad hoc Comp Plan
Team Bike Destination (TBD) ? ??
Marlys and Janie have appt. with Chamber of Commerce
Ndti,
G
in Lanesboro on April 27
Honoring our Past
Valuing our Present
Planning for our Future
Potential Time Line:
Summer 2017: Survey and count cyclists who come through town.
Ask "what they need"
Review potential grants that consider issues of Bike Fix -It Station,
and bike racks.
Invite other groups i.e. Bone Lake and Marine Lake associations
(Sand Lake?) Businesses etc. to join our efforts.
Work with businesses at intersection of Olinda and Oakhill for
possible bike friendly amenities and placement.
Look at options for public toilet facilities.
Fall
2017:
Sponsor a community
bike
ride
on either
Bone Lake
route (11
miles)
or Sand
lake
(7 miles)
Shorter
loop
for families?
2018: Spring/Summer: Install biker "fix — it" station and bike rack.
Install public toilet facility near intersection.
2018 Fall: Review survey and grants and consider next steps.
Review potential "stops" for bike event.
2019 Sprig/Summer/Fall: Consider an invitation to Metro Bike
Clubs to come to Scandia for a bike ride and tour. Stops at
Gammelgarden, Goat Farm? Llama Farm? Swedish monument? ???
2020: Begin efforts to bring Minnesota Design Team to our city
