Last month, calls to Washington County Sheriff’s Office
regarding e-bikes and scooters jumped. Most were
nuisance-related, involving kids riding in places they
shouldn’t be, after dark or not wearing helmets, but some
involved crashes and injuries — some serious.
Ordinances vary depending on what city or town you live
in, and leaders in many communities are working to
address their citizens’ concerns about safety and to clarify
what is allowed and what is not. The chart above does a
good job of explaining the differences between the many
types of vehicles, who can ride them, where they’re legal
to be ridden, and it cites the Minnesota statutes that
communities must follow. Search the statutes HERE.
General safety guidelines for any sort of motorized riding
include:
Always wear a helmet!
Ride at a reasonable speed and be aware of your
surroundings.
When riding on paths or sidewalks, warn pedestrians
and pass cautiously on the left.
If your device is street-legal, ride in the same
direction as traffic, on the right side.
Signal your turns and yield at intersections.
Use lights and extra caution after dark.
Knowing the rules can help everyone have a more
enjoyable experience. Stay safe out there, and have fun!

At 8:16pm on June 6, a patrol deputy arrived at the scene of a two-car
accident with reported minor injuries. Upon arrival, the deputy found one
car with damage parked on the west side of St. Croix Trail N. The deputy
tended to Driver 1’s hands, which were bleeding, most likely from glass
shattered in the crash. Driver 1 told the deputy that while driving north on
St. Croix Trail, he activated his left turn signal to turn onto 220th Street N.
Driver 1 said as he began to slow and turn left, Driver 2 ran into the
driver’s side of Driver 1’s car. The deputy then spoke to the Driver 2, who
said she had been following closely behind Driver 1 and thought he was
going to turn right, so she attempted to pass on the left. The deputy
noted there was a double yellow no-passing line in that area. Driver 2
was identified through her Minnesota ID card; the deputy confirmed she
had no driver’s license, and the deputy informed her she would receive a
citation for driving without a valid driver’s license.

June was a busy month at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
First, we were honored to introduce our newest narcotics detection K9, Rogue, to the
Greene family. The Greenes have generously supported our agency through donations,
helping fund education and prevention efforts within our Narcotics Unit. A portion of their
donations helped us welcome Rogue. The visit gave the family a chance to see the impact
of their support firsthand, watching Rogue work through a narcotics detection exercise,
sniffing, searching, and zeroing in on the target. Public safety is stronger because of
community partners like the Greenes, and we thank them.
Then, the WCSO K9 Unit brought home 1st Place Department Team at this year’s U.S.
Police Canine Association Patrol Certification in Rochester, competing against 53 teams
from across the region. Highlights include: Deputy Yetter & K9 Huck, 1st Place Overall and
Top Criminal Apprehension Score; Deputy Liebenow & K9 Viking, 2nd Place Overall; Nate
Thienes & K9 Goose, 5th Place Overall; Ross Peterson & K9 Mack, 1st Place Obedience.
Congratulations to the handlers and their K9 partners!
Finally, the WCSO Jail Parenting Program received an award and was recognized by the
Washington County Board of Commissioners for its innovations in helping incarcerated
parents maintain meaningful connections with their children — promoting family well-
being, mitigating the trauma of family separation, and reducing recidivism upon release.
Between 2013 and 2025, more than 250 parenting groups were held at the county jail,
reaching 629 fathers and 305 mothers. It is estimated that this work has positively
impacted up to 2,500 children. We thank the team for its outstanding work.
