Subject: Budgeted Trailer Purchases
Background:
The 2026 CIP schedule includes the purchase of two trailers to replace the Public Works
equipment and utility trailers
Proposal:
Public Works is seeking approval to purchase a new equipment trailer and utility trailer. Our
current trailers are a 2012 14,000 lb. equipment trailer and a 1998 5,000 lb. utility trailer.
The 2012 equipment trailer has supported the department well but lacks the load capacity to
fully support our current equipment. To legally carry our current equipment a new trailer with a
higher load capacity is necessary. Public Works proposes to purchase a new equipment trailer
with higher load capacity to support hauling the skid steer or loader to the job site and/or to
the dealer for repairs and service. Currently our equipment is required to be picked up by a
third-party hauler or the dealer service techs must come to our facility at higher hourly rates to
service our equipment. With the ability to haul our own equipment will save cost long-term
when equipment needs to be serviced or repaired by the dealer. The last service to our loader
cost the city $700 to pick up from and deliver back to our facility.
The 1998 utility trailer has mostly been used for hauling the park mower from site to site and is
aging more rapidly due to its long service with the department. Public Works proposes
purchasing a new tilt bed utility trailer which would allow for better loading and unloading
capabilities and with a higher load rating to allow the department to haul other loads safely
from our facility to the job site. A trailer this size also falls below DOT regulations, allowing staff
without a commercial drivers license to haul equipment or materials that fit within the trailer
load rating.
Fiscal Impact:
There is no negative fiscal impact with the purchase of two new trailers as both recommended
options fall below the budgeted amount for 2026. The budgeted amount for the equipment
trailer is $20,000 and $10,000 for the utility trailer. Total cost to purchase the two trailers
equates to $3,246.68 below the CIP budgeted amount.
