7.a) Staff Report-Winter ProgrammingSCANLl_A STAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: October 2, 2017 To: Parks and Recreation Committee From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Winter Programming Background: Last year we offered three skating programs: Pleasure Skating (K -6t" grade) There were 11 students registered for this program at a rate of $25 for the six-week class. Last year, Committee Member Dustin Hegland supervised the class. Learn to Skate (for beginner and advanced skaters) There were 24 students registered for these programs at a rate of $59 for the six-week class. Katy Herman was a contracted instructor for the Learn to Skate programs. Issue: Should the Parks and Recreation Committee offer the Pleasure Skating program and Learn to Skate programs again this coming winter? Should the Parks and Recreation Committee offer other winter programs? Proposal Details: Staff is proposing the same registration fee as last year for the Pleasure Skating program. I propose it would run the same time as last year's program, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., one day a week (Thursday) for six weeks beginning January 4, 2018 at a cost of $25 for the six-week program. Hegland has offered to supervise this program. Staff met with Katy Herman, the Skating Director of Cutting Edge Skating Association (CESA) in Forest Lake and experienced coach, who taught the Learn to Skate programs for the past four years. Herman is interested in teaching the classes again this coming winter. Herman is proposing increasing the registration fee to $65. The Learn to Skate programs would run from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., one day a week (Wednesday) for six weeks beginning Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at a cost of $65. Fiscal Impact: Herman would receive 80% of the registration fees as compensation for the Learn to Skate programs. Options: 1. Offer all of the proposed programs. 2. Offer some of the proposed programs. 3. Do not offer any proposed programs. Recommendation: Option 1
