5.e Staff Report- Designating a polling place for 2018 elections Staff Report Date of Meeting: November 21, 2017 To: City Council From: Brenda Eklund, Deputy Clerk Re: Designating a Polling Place for 2018 Elections Background: A new law, Minn. Stat. § 204B.16, subd. 1, requires that by December 31 of each year, each city (and each county with unorganized territory) must designate a precinct polling place for elections being held in the following year by ordinance or resolution. An exception for polling place changes are allowed for emergencies or if a polling place becomes unavailable. Polling places must be designated and ballots must be distributed so that no one is required to go to more than one polling place to vote in a school district and municipal election held on the same day. Proposal Details: For many years, the Scandia Community Center has been the polling location for Scandia’s single precinct. The facility is sufficient in size to accommodate all election activities and meets the requirements of subdivision 5 of the statute -- that it’s accessible to and usable by elderly individuals and individuals with disabilities. Options: 1) Approve Resolution No. 11-21-17-04, Designating the Scandia Community Center as the polling place for the 2018 elections. 2) Designate an alternative polling place for 2018 elections. 3) Do not approve Resolution No. 11-21-17-01. Recommendation: Option 1.
