7.b) Staff Report-Scanley Cup Planning STAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: August 4, 2014 To: Parks and Recreation Committee From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Scanley Cup 2015 Planning Background: On January 31, and February 1, 2014, Roberts Family Funeral Home hosted the inaugural Scanley Cup adult hockey tournament during the annual Vinterfest community celebration. The Scanley Cup resulted in net financial proceeds of $1,000 donated to the Wojtowicz skating rink. Corey Roberts organized the hockey tournament and, a lthough was pleased with the overall results, Roberts asked to meet with the Parks and Recreation Committee to share ideas and suggest changes to improve the tournament for Vinterfest 2015. Issue: Should the Parks and Recreation Committee recommend changes to the Scanley Cup hockey tournament as well as recommend the Scanley Cup fundraiser be held during Vinterfest 2015? Proposal Details: Roberts will be present to discuss any changes to his recommendations following Scanley Cup 2014. At the time, those changes included: - Adding a full- time DJ and announcer for real time scores and updates . - Including offsides and icing. - Enhancing the spectator experience with bleachers and a fully heated tent to include more food and beverage (bar) options. - Providing live music. - Changing benefactor annually to stay within the Scandia community. - Adding sponsorship opportunities. - Moving slap shot contest to the main rink as entertainment between games. - Providing rubber mats to protect skates. - Considering increasing the registration fee per team from $250 to $400. Fiscal Impact: The amount of proceeds from the Scanley Cup hockey tournament fundraiser is unknown at this time. Options: 1) Recommend to include Scanley Cup adult hockey tournament during Vinterfest 2015 festivities, as well as the suggested changes. 2) Recommend to include the tournament during Vinterfest 2015 with some recommended changes. 3) Recommend to include the tournament during Vinterfest 2015 with no changes. 4) Do not recommend the tournament to the City Council. Recommendation: Option 1 or 2.
