Why concerned?
Milkweeds and nectar sources are declining due to
development and widespread use of herbicides in
croplands, pastures and roadsides.
Habitat loss of 6,000 acres a day to development of
shopping centers, subdivisions and factories.
Herbicide-resistant corn and soybeans – loss of 100
million acres of monarch habitat in recent years.
2013 lowest count of Monarch since 1993.
5
To offset the loss of milkweeds and nectar
sources . . .
we need to create, conserve, and protect
monarch butterfly habitats.
We can help by creating “Monarch
Waystations” in home gardens, at schools,
business, parks, zoos, nature centers, along
roadsides and on other unused plots of land.

Comments: Totals 3.5 acres, is located 10 miles east of the Pacific
Ocean and midpoint (25-30 miles) from Pacific Grove and Santa
Cruz, California. These cities are homes to two significant western
Monarch overwintering sites.
In 1995, we became aware of Monarchs and their need for
milkweed and habitat.
We decided to convert this field to a monarch habitat. We began
slowly by developing single portions at a time by adding plants,
some trees, water sources and milkweed. In 1991, we observed an
occasional Monarch flying by
Now, 14 years later, with all the milkweed, nectar plants and
additional trees, plus sources of water, we have an abundance of
Monarchs during the annual migrations with some now staying
longer and longer, which is why we call it a Monarch 'Bed and
Breakfast. 16
