8.g) Staff Report-Hire FT Maintenance WorkerSCANDIA Staff RepoVt Date of Meeting: February 18, 2014 To: City Council From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator Tim Kieffer, Public Works Director Re: Hire FT Maintenance Worker Background: At the December 2013 meeting, the Council authorized advertising for applicants for the newly added FT Maintenance Worker position. Thirty eight applications were received and the Administrator and Public Works Director interviewed seven candidates on January 28th. The top three then completed skills testing with the Public Works Director on February 5ffi. Issue: Who should the Council hire as a FT Maintenance Worker? Proposal Details: After completing the interviews, staff is recommending that Brian Jahnke be hired as a FT Maintenance Worker at a pay rate of $19.82/hour. Jahnke has been working for the City on a part-time, on-call basis this winter to help with snow removal operations. His previous experience in the construction industry and familiarity with a wide variety of heavy equipment, building maintenance and positive attitude will make him a valuable member of our team. Jahnke has a Class A license but will need to obtain the required water and sewer licenses. A drug test and background check were completed in Oct/Nov last year. Physical testing was completed earlier this month. To allow adequate time for notice to his current employer, Jahnke's proposed start date is March 5th Fiscal Impact: The 2014 budget includes $67, 585 to cover the wages, benefits and taxes for the new position. Since Jahnke will be starting in March, expenses should come in at least 15% under budget. Options: 1) Approve hiring Brian Jahnke as a FT Maintenance Worker at a pay rate of $19.82/hour 2) Direct staff to continue search and/or review other applicants. Recommendation: Option 1.
