Re: Hire FT Maintenance Worker
Background:
At the December 2013 meeting, the Council authorized advertising for applicants for the newly added FT
Maintenance Worker position. Thirty eight applications were received and the Administrator and Public
Works Director interviewed seven candidates on January 28th. The top three then completed skills testing
with the Public Works Director on February 5ffi.
Issue:
Who should the Council hire as a FT Maintenance Worker?
Proposal Details:
After completing the interviews, staff is recommending that Brian Jahnke be hired as a FT Maintenance
Worker at a pay rate of $19.82/hour. Jahnke has been working for the City on a part-time, on-call basis
this winter to help with snow removal operations. His previous experience in the construction industry
and familiarity with a wide variety of heavy equipment, building maintenance and positive attitude will
make him a valuable member of our team. Jahnke has a Class A license but will need to obtain the
required water and sewer licenses.
A drug test and background check were completed in Oct/Nov last year. Physical testing was completed
earlier this month.
To allow adequate time for notice to his current employer, Jahnke's proposed start date is March 5th
Fiscal Impact:
The 2014 budget includes $67, 585 to cover the wages, benefits and taxes for the new position. Since
Jahnke will be starting in March, expenses should come in at least 15% under budget.
Options:
1) Approve hiring Brian Jahnke as a FT Maintenance Worker at a pay rate of $19.82/hour
2) Direct staff to continue search and/or review other applicants.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
