7.b) Staff Report-Scandia Farmers Market
STAFF REPORT
Date of Meeting: July 7, 2014
To: Parks and Recreation Committee
From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant
Re: Wednesday, July 23, Scandia Farmers Market
Background:
The Scandia Farmers Market is held at the Gammelgården Museum on Wednesdays from 4
p.m. to 7 p.m. through September 24, 2014. The market hosts monthly summer celebrations
called “Summer in the Gården.” July is national picnic month and the Scandia Farmers Market
will be celebrating “Pack-up and Picnic” on Wednesday, July 23.
Scandia Farmers Market Representative Pam Arnold is asking the National Park Service, Friends
of Scandia Parks and Trails, Carnelian Marine Watershed District, and Scandia Parks and
Recreation Committee if they would like to join the market to share information about outdoor
opportunities and promote other sponsored events.
Issue:
Should the Parks and Recreation Committee join the Scandia Farmers Market on Wednesday,
July 23, to share information about the outdoor opportunities and events the Committee
offers?
Proposal Details:
The Parks and Recreation Committee could share a booth space, providing a table and canopy,
or could join Scandia Farmers Market Manager Cal at the Market Manager’s booth. The booth
has a large canopy and is located at the center of the market.
Some suggestions Arnold proposed included highlighting bike trails, picnic spots in Scandia, St.
Croix River access points, shore lunch spots, wildlife locations, natural features, day trips, boat
rentals, hiking, and recreation opportunities that offer grills/shady spots, tables, great view of
the natural world, and maps and other printed guides/websites.
The July 23 featured event will include a Swedish Youth Fiddle Orchestra in costume from
Sweden called “Vikarbnys Lilla Spellmanslag”. Marketers will be asked to bring lawn chairs and
a picnic meal from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in front of the Ladugård (Barn) at the Gammelgården.
Arnold shared Scandia Farmers Market would publicize in the local and regional media.
Chair Zauner is proposing the updated “Scandia History and Museums” flyer be distributed at
the July 23 market. In addition, Staff is proposing the updated summer recreation program
flyer be distributed.
Fiscal Impact:
None.
Options:
1) Distribute both recommended flyers.
2) Distribute one or the other recommended flyers.
3) Do not attend the July 23 market to distribute flyers.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
