STAFF REPORT

Re: Vinterfest Preliminary Planning
Background:
The Parks and Recreation Committee has identified Vinterfest as one of its priorities. Although
February 2015 is still many months away, the Committee may want to begin preparing and
making plans now, particularly if any changes will be made.
At the March 3, 2014 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting, recommendations were made
for planning Vinterfest 2015.
Roberts made several suggestions for improvements to next year’s Scanley Cup to include:
a full-time PA announcer to update scores and provide music.
enhancing the spectator experience by providing a larger heated tent.
move slap shot contest to the ice rink and compete between games.
rubber mats to protect skates.
considering increasing the registration fee per team from $250 to $400.
Committee members made recommendations for Vinterfest 2015 to include:
Rasmussen recommended more business involvement.
Zauner recommended better promotion of the sponsors and the schedule of events.
Bildeaux offered to provide more fire pits.
Negus reported the Scandia-Marine Lions will hold their annual winter pancake
breakfast on Saturday morning during Vinterfest 2015.
Issue:
Should the Parks and Recreation Committee do anything different for Vinterfest 2015?
Proposal Details:
The Committee should decide if anything needs to be changed on the promotional materials.
The Committee also needs to assign duties/roles for Vinterfest 2015.
Fiscal Impact:
The Committee recommended the City Council approve an “Events” budget of $1,000 for 2015,
with $600 earmarked for Vinterfest expenses; $400 to cover advertising and printing expenses
and $200 to cover additional expenses.
Recommendation:
The Committee should identify any changes they would like to see for Vinterfest 2015 at this
meeting so that preparations can begin this fall.
