7.b) Staff Report-Summer Programs STAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: March 3, 2014 To: Parks and Recreation Committee From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Summer 2014 Recreation Programs Background: In October 2013, I met with Pam Wurster of Camp Lakamaga to discuss summer 2014 recreation programs offered through Camp Lakamaga. The City has a Program Agreement with Camp Lakamaga to provide recreation activities to the City’s residents. In consideration of this Agreement, the City pays Camp Lakamaga eighty percent (80%) of the registration fees. Issue: In past years, we offered the “Cleat Kids” program for children ages 4-6. Last year, we cancelled both sessions of the “Cleat Kids” program due to low enrollment. Camp Lakamaga no longer chooses to offer this class due to staffing concerns. As well, Camp Lakamaga will no longer offer the “Art Adventurer” class and the “Water Bonanza” class. These classes are included in the day camp programs they offer. Proposal Details: Camp Lakamaga will continue to offer the full-day “Outdoor Explorers Day Camp” at the same rate as last year ($140). Camp Lakamaga will continue to offer the half-day “Junior Explorers Day Camp” at the same rate as last year ($65). The cost for the “Little Tyke Archers” and “Robin Hood & Maid Marion Archers” classes increases from $12 to $14 this year. The City will also continue to offer Skateboarding Camp and Tennis Camp. I am in the process of finding an instructor and hope the class will be taught by last year’s instructor. The Skateboarding Camp was cancelled due to low enrollment last year. It is our goal to meet a minimum enrollment of five (5) registrations this year. I am in the process of finding an instructor. Recommendation: I recommend we offer all the summer recreation programs detailed in the corresponding documentation.
