7.c) Staff Report-Winter Programming STAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: November 3, 2014 To: Parks and Recreation Committee From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Winter Programming Background Last year, we offered two skating programs: Pleasure Skating (K-6th grade) There were 15 students registered for this program at a rate of $25 for the six -week class. As in past years, Matt Rasmussen and Dana Wojtowicz volunteered to teach the class. Learn to Skate (for beginner and advanced skaters) There were 30 students registered for this program at a rate of $59 for the six-week class. Katy Herman was a contracted instructor for the Learn to Skate program. Herman has agreed to teach the class again this year. At the October 6, 2014 meeting, Negus proposed a new skating program to be offered this year. The program would tie in with the Vinterfest theme--“Saami--Reindeer Herders of Scandinavia.” The goal of the five-week class is to put on a choreographed performance in Saami costume on Friday night, February 6, 2015. In addition, Negus proposed to offer an “Introduction to Hockey” program to replace the Pleasure Skating program that was offered on Thursdays f rom 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. Staff was in the process of trying to recruit an instructor. Rasmussen informed the Committee he would be able to commit to teaching three weeks of the six-week Pleasure Skating program. Rasmussen agreed to solicit another volunteer to assist supervising the program. Committee members agreed to attempt to offer all the proposed programs. Negus reported she would have her finalized winter program recommendation at the November 3, 2014 PRC meeting when she hopes to receive direction regarding the Pleasure Skating program and an Introduction to Hockey program instructor. Issue Should the Parks and Recreation Committee offer the Pleasure Skating program? Proposal Details Negus was unable to find an instructor for a new Introduction to Hockey program. Rasmussen informed Negus that Dana Wojtowicz is offering to help supervise the Pleasure Skating program. Staff has included in the meeting materials a draft winter programs flyer that details the winter recreation programs Staff would like offered. Options 1. Approve the winter recreation programs flyer for distribution. 2. Do not approve the winter recreation programs flyer for distribution. 3. Recommend another flyer.
