Re: Scanley Cup 2015 Planning
Background:
On January 31, and February 1, 2014, Roberts Family Funeral Home hosted the inaugural
Scanley Cup adult hockey tournament during the annual Vinterfest community celebration.
The Scanley Cup resulted in net financial proceeds of $1,000 donated to the Wojtowicz skating
rink. Corey Roberts attended the August 4, 2014 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting and
shared suggestions to enhance the 2015 Scanley Cup tournament. Roberts asked to return to
the October 6 meeting to follow-up on preliminary planning, including investigating the
expense and liability of a fireworks display and the expense of a more durable tent. Roberts
also suggested the fundraising proceeds go to a Scandia family in need.
Issue:
Should the Parks and Recreation Committee recommend changes to the Scanley Cup hockey
tournament as well as recommend the Scanley Cup fundraising proceeds be given to a Scandia
family in need or another cause?
Proposal Details:
Roberts is proposing the proceeds from the Scanley Cup fundraiser go to a cause or a specific
family in the community that is suffering a hardship. Although fundraise rs for private parties
can be held on City property, the City rents its facilities for this purpose. Our Ice Rink Policy
does not accept reservations of the rink on weekends. The City cannot donate any funds for a
non-public purpose such as a private benefit of a family. This would include any advertising
costs or waiver of permit or rental fees. As well, City employees could not be responsible for
rink maintenance. The City Council approved closing the rink to the general public last year
because the rink would benefit from the proceeds of the hockey tournament.
Fiscal Impact:
The amount of proceeds from the Scanley Cup hockey tournament fundraiser is unknown at
this time.
Options:
1) Recommend to include Scanley Cup adult hockey tournament during Vinterfest 2015
festivities, as well as the suggested changes.
2) Recommend to include the tournament during Vinterfest 2015 with some
recommended changes.
3) Recommend to include the tournament during Vinterfest 2015 with no changes.
4) Do not recommend the tournament to the City Council.
Recommendation:
Option 1 or 2.
