7.a) Staff Report-Winter Programming
STAFF REPORT
Date of Meeting: October 6, 2014
To: Parks and Recreation Committee
From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant
Re: Winter Programming
Background
Last year, we offered two skating programs:
Pleasure Skating (K-6th grade)
There were 15 students registered for this program at a rate of $25 for the six -week class. As in
past years, Matt Rasmussen and Dana Wojtowicz volunteered to teach the class. This winter,
Rasmussen and Wojtowicz will not be available to run the Pleasure Skating program.
Learn to Skate (for beginner and advanced skaters)
There were 30 students registered for this program at a rate of $59 for the six-week class. Katy
Herman was a contracted instructor for the Learn to Skate program. Herman has agreed to
teach the class again this year.
Issue
Should the Parks and Recreation Committee offer the Pleasure Skating program and Learn to
Skate program again this winter? Should the PRC offer other skating programs? Should the
PRC offer any other winter programs?
Proposal Details
I met with Katy Herman, the Skating Director of Cutting Edge Skating Association (CESA) in
Forest Lake and experienced coach, who taught the Learn to Skate program last year. Herman
is interested in teaching the class again this coming winter. Herman is proposing the same
registration fee as last year. The Learn to Skate program would run the same time as last year’s
program, from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m., one day a week (Tuesday) for six weeks beginning Tuesday,
January 6, 2015, at a cost of $59. Katy would receive 80% of the registration fees as
compensation.
Herman is also proposing to offer another skating program this year. The program would tie in
with our Vinterfest theme of “Saami--Reindeer Herders of Scandinavia.” The goal of the five-
week class is to put on a choreographic performance in Saami costume on Friday night,
February 6, 2015, at the pond at Gammelgarden. Herman would conduct the class after the
Learn to Skate program from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning, January 6, 2015,
and conclude on February 3, 2015. Ms. Herman proposed a registration fee of $49. Herman
would receive 80% of the registration fees as compensation.
Staff is proposing we offer an “Introduction to Hockey” program to replace the Pleasure Skating
program that was offered on Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. Staff is in the process of
finding an instructor.
Options
1. Offer all of the proposed programs.
2. Offer some of the proposed programs.
3. Do not offer any proposed programs.
