Re: Art in Action Summer Program
Background:
Staff was contacted by Rachel Kuhnle of the St. Croix Festival Theatre in June 2017 to consider
offering a summer arts camp. Due to time limitations, staff suggested proposing the Art in
Action program for the following summer. The Parks and Recreation Committee reviewed this
proposal at their January 4 meeting.
Issue:
Should the Art in Action program be offered this coming summer?
Proposal Details:
Art in Action is a week-long summer drama camp for kids.
The basics:
• For campers ages 5-12
• Monday -Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
• At locations throughout the St. Croix Valley
• Campers must provide a snack and water bottle
• Fee: $50 per child for the week, all supplies provided
• Showtime! The final performance is Friday at 11:30 a.m.
At Art in Action camp, children will:
• Create, rehearse, and perform in an original short play
• Design and paint the scenic backdrop for the play
• Create characters and an original costume design
• Choreograph, rehearse, and perform an original dance
• Learn about story structure and what makes for a good story
• Explore and experiment with the three actor tools (the voice, the body, and the
imagination) through games and activities
• Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate
• Perform their play for a live audience of family and friends!!
St. Croix Festival Theatre staff would be responsible for handling all marketing, registrations,
and materials. The classes would be held at the Community Center.
Recommendation:
The Parks and Recreation Committee recommends donating space at the Community Center
and offering the Art in Action summer program detailed.
