Re: Hiring of Probationary Firefighters
Background:
At the February Council meeting, staff was authorized to advertise and interview applicants for
up to six probationary firefighter positions. Six applications were received by April. Two of the
applicants lived beyond the eight minute requirement from the Fire Hall. The Administrator,
Chief and two Assistant Chiefs interviewed the other four applicants in mid -April. Three
applicants participated in the physical testing on May 3, 2014 and passed. One applicant had to
withdraw his name due to increased responsibilities at work.
Issue:
Who should the Council hire for the probationary firefighter positions?
Proposal Details:
Staff is recommending that the following individuals be approved as probationary firefighters
subject to passing a drug test and medical evaluation: Gregory White, Ben McCarty, and John
Hagen (subject to graduating high school in June).
Fiscal Impact:
Consistent with Resolution 03-19-13-04, the starting pay would be $10/hour. After the
probationary period and obtaining certain certifications, the firefighters would be eligible for pay
increases.
Options:
1) Subject to passing a drug test and medical evaluation, approve hiring Gregory White,
Ben McCarty, and John Hagen (subject to graduating high school) as probationary
firefighters.
2) Subject to passing a drug test and medical evaluation, approve hiring another list of
applicants as probationary firefighters.
3) Do not hire additional probationary firefighters at this time.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
