Re: Hiring Tennis Instructor for Summer 2018 Recreation Program
Background:
Last year, we did not offer a tennis camp because staff was unable to secure an instructor. In
past years, four week-long tennis camps were offered at a rate of $35 per session. The minimum
registration to run the camp has been set at 6, with a class limit of up to 12 registrations.
Issue:
Should staff offer tennis camps this summer and who should the Council hire for the tennis
instructor position?
Proposal Details:
Staff is recommending Kennedy Torgerson be hired as the tennis instructor at a rate of $12.85
per hour. Torgerson has been a member of the Chisago Lakes High School Tennis Team since 7th
grade and will be attending 11th grade this fall. Torgerson lives in Chisago City, is on the A honor
roll at Chisago Lakes High School, and has experience assisting the tennis coach. Torgerson’s
resume follows this staff report. Torgerson also offers private lessons upon request.
The tennis camps would be offered the weeks of June 11 and August 20 for one hour each day at
a rate of $35 per session. If the City’s tennis courts are under reconstruction, the camps could
be moved to the Gammelgarden Museum tennis courts.
Fiscal Impact:
The established 2013 pay rate per Resolution No. 12 -18-12-02 for this position is $12.85. The
tennis camp is Monday through Friday for one hour a day for four sessions. The budget is
sufficient to cover the program. If registrations are limited, the camp would be canceled.
Options:
1) Approve hiring Kennedy Torgerson at a rate of $12.85 per hour for the tennis instructor
position.
2) Approve hiring Kennedy Torgerson at a different rate of pay for the tennis instructor
position.
3) Approve hiring another instructor for the tennis instructor position.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
