New hours worked for City
This is a touchy area we have to work with the FLSA rules. The stipend is based on 23 hrs per
week. Not sure on which days I would be at the station yet, but would be there 3 days per week.
It would be a mix of week days 0800-1630 & 0930-1800. Since I will still need time in the
evenings to meet with members of the department that work during the day.
The new stipend is to replace the current stipend. There are no set hours for this. It is a flexible
schedule to avoid overtime and full time status and is not tied to the call wages. If you would like
to make this a defined shift or want more control over hours worked you should consider just
changing the chief pay scale and have the chief clock in when ever working or going to a
call/training. The wage for this position that I am comfortable with is $28.00/hr.
The average wage for a chief is $34.62 plus benefits as of May 2011, as stated by the U.S.
Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.
I also attend, evening meetings(WC, City, Regional, Fire training, EMS training) & emergency
calls. These will all count towards the 40 hrs rule.
Chief attends 4 fire trainings per month,
Monday 1830 (Fire training) 3hrs
Tuesday 1830 (Rescue Training) 3hrs
Monday 1830 (Fire Training & Business meeting) 3hrs
Saturday 0830 (make-up training for the month) 3 hrs
Washington county chiefs every other month in Oakdale 3hrs
CAP city regional meetings twice per year. 4hrs
City council regular meetings 3hrs
City work sessions as needed 3hrs same night as WC Chiefs meeting
Other Officers
The job that the officers do is in there job description and they have as little available free time
as everyone, there tasks will not be affected much by this change. I will work on there job
descriptions as part of my duties and part of there reviews.
