Re: Advertising for Seasonal Maintenance Worker for Parks and Grounds
Background:
Under direction of the full-time maintenance staff, the seasonal parks maintenance employee
performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks necessary to the seasonal
maintenance of grounds, equipment, and buildings at city parks and municipal buildings.
Seasonal staff has traditionally been hired for approximately 32 hours a week beginning in late
May and ending in early October. The part-time employment opportunity is a 66 day seasonal
appointment since part-time employees working more than this number of days are required to
become members of the bargaining unit.
Issue:
Should the Council approve advertising for a Seasonal Maintenance Worker for Parks and
Grounds?
Proposal Details:
Similar to previous years, staff is requesting the Council authorize staff (City Administrator and
Public Works Director) to advertise and interview the applicants for the position with a
recommendation on hiring coming to the Council in May.
The tentative timeline would be as follows:
Post/ advertise on web site: April 18th
Advertise in local papers: Starting April 24th
Applications close: Friday, May 4th (4:00 p.m.)
Interviews: Week of May 7th
Council Approval: May 15th
Start date: ASAP after Council approval
Fiscal Impact:
The 2018 pay range for the position is $10.20 to $12.25 per hour, depending on qualifications.
The 2018 budget was based on a pay rate of $11.50 per hour. The position will terminate at the
earlier of 66 days worked or end of the grounds maintenance season.
Options:
1) Approve having staff advertise and interview for the Part-Time Seasonal Parks
Maintenance Worker position and prepare a recommendation.
2) Do not approve the advertising for the Part-Time Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker
position.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
