8.a)2) Accept Donation from Scandia Marine Lions and Approve Related 2011 Budget Amendments Meeting Date: 07/19/2011 Agenda Item: ` Je City Council Agenda Report City of Scandia 14727 209`h St. North Scandia, MN 55073 (651) 433-2274 Action Requested: Accept donations from the Scandia Marine Lions Club ($1,700.00) for the purchase of speed enforcement equipment (ProLaser III Lidar) and approve related budget amendments. Deadline/ Timeline: N/A Background: • The Scandia Marine Lions Club has made a cash donation of $1,700.00 for the purchase of a reconditioned ProLaser III Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) unit. Deputy Majeski recommended this equipment, which allows officers to more precisely target vehicles to measure speed than the standard radar units. The donation will cover the entire cost except shipping. • Currently, the Washington County Sheriff's Department only owns 3 Lidar units, so it is available to the Scandia car only a few days of the year. The donation has been made to the City to ensure that the equipment is available to the deputy serving Scandia on a daily basis. • The equipment will require periodic calibration and maintenance, which will be handled by the Sheriff's Department. It may be necessary to enter into a formal agreement with them; that is yet to be determined. • The City Council must accept all donations by resolution. • The Council should also approve a budget amendment and authorize the purchase of the equipment. Recommendation: I recommend that the Council adopt the resolution accepting the donations, approving the purchase, and making amendments to the 2011 budget to reflect the donation revenue and the expenditure for the equipment. ' .. .. . . ,. .. , ., .., July 14, 2011 - f'' Dear Mayor and CounciL• It is with great pleasure that my wife Ruth, and I, in conjunction with the Scandia - Lions Club, have raised the money needed to purchase a Laser Gun for our community law enforcement officer. One half of the money for this project was donated by citizens in Scandia and , ' Marine who share our concern for street and highway safety in our communities; the other half was donated by the Lions Club. Unfortunately, the County does not have the funds to make this purchase; at times like this, we need to be self reliant and not expect government to do - everything for us. We have met that challenge. We thank the Lions for their participation in this project to make our communities safer.
