SCANDI • ' ' . e To: City Council From:Laurie Monson, Parks & Recreation Coordinator CC: Anne Hurlburt, City Administrator Date: September 9, 2011 Re: 2011 Summer Recreation Program Report This summer the city offered a total of 22 classes with 5 classes cancelling due to low enrollment. Last year 24 classes were offered and 9 cancelled due to low enrollment. As in past years, we again partnered with Camp Lakamaga to offer a variety of classes. A total of 118 kids participated in classes/camps this summer. Our most popular classes were Tennis and Outdoor Explorers Day Camp. Last year we had 25 kids enroll in the full day camp and this year we had 40. New offerings this year included archery, comic book camp and skateboard camp. My son enrolled in comic book camp and loved it. The teacher was excellent. Skateboard camp was also very popular. Here's what some of the parents had to say: "The class was great. Matt was great My son really enjoyed the class. It was the perfect size c/ass and think he did a great job with the kids. 1 would sign my son up again for the c/ass if offerd." "We loved the skateboarol camp, we drove from Linwood for the opportunity. We knew that Mait was new to this, and thought that he did great at leaming on the job. Our family was amazed at how much our son learned. If offered, we would denitely do it again. We would also recommend it to others." Marketing efforts included the Summer Program Brochure being sent home in the City's Spring Newsletter and with Scandia Elementary kids. I also handed out brochures at the Scandia Elementary School Carnival and sent out several press releases to the Country Messenger, Forest Lake Times, Star Tribune and Pioneer Press. The city website was also used to promote classes and send out email blasts. Brochures were also dropped off at the Marine Library and Hardwood Creek Library. Last year several parents mentioned they would like to have some sort of email or letter before day camps started with a list of what to bring, etc. I did email a Camp Letter to Parents the week before day camp outlining what kids needed to bring, directions to Lakamaga, contact phone numbers, and other pertinent information. I will be meeting with Camp Lakamaga staff on September 13"' to talk about how the summer programs went and how we can make improvements for next year.
