Re: Park Bench Standards
Background:
Staff was asked to provide and research costs for benches to work toward the goal discussed
at the May 7th meeting. Staff also contacted the person willing to donate a bench to the parks
was contacted and asked what their vision was and the approximate value of the gift. The gift
value was $250.00 -$750.00. The person wishing to donate a bench has provided a picture of
the bench she is proposing as well as a memorial maker. Staff has included the pictures of the
bench proposed during the May meeting as well as another selection similar to what is
currently down town. At this time the Parks Committee has no guidelines other than the
City's donation policy to follow. Staff has also been informed the local Lions Club is possibly
interested in making future bench donations as well.
Issue:
Staff would like the Parks Committee to make a decision on the type of bench(s) that would
be an acceptable standard for parks and urban areas within the City whether donated or
purchased by the City. The Parks Committee also needs to make a decision on a process to
evaluate areas to have the benches placed.
Proposal:
Staff has provided more selections of benches and their approximate cost. Due to the expense
of purchasing benches staff recommends that there is some choice of bench to purchase
depending on location and they be limited to 6' in length. Staff has included in the meeting
materials a specification sheet for another city. Please see pages 29-32 in the manual. Staff is
proposing the Parks committee also delineate which benches are installed in which locations
by natural vs urban setting.
Fiscal Impact:
If they are donated there is no financial impact. The parks department is not funded
specifically for these purchases. In the upcoming years the Parks Budget should reflect
furniture purchasing needs. The prices are variable due to the price of metal and other
materials. There is also a set up fee for each bench that have engraving or cut outs.

1. Free Standing Benches — 6' — Parks general — Option A no plaques, Parks —Donated —
Option B, City and business areas — Option D.
2. Free Standing Benches — 6' — Parks — Option A&B general or donated can have

3. Committee decides on an option.
