Re: 2010 Summer Recreation Program Report
This summer the city offered a total of 24 classes with 9 classes cancelling due to low enrollment. Last
year 37 classes were offered and 21 cancelled due to low enrollment. As in past years, we again
partnered with Camp Lakamaga to offer a nice variety of classes.
Our most popular classes were Tennis, Little Cleat Kids, Outdoor Explorers Day Camp and Junior
Explorers '/z Day Camp. In 2009 only 9 kids participated in the all day camp and this year we had 25
kids participate. We also offered a'/z day camp option and 22 kids participated in this.
Our most popular new class offering was a Geocaching class (Nature Navigators) and there were 10
kids that signed up for this.
Marketing efforts included the Summer Program Brochure being sent home in the City's Spring
Newsletter and with Scandia Elementary kids. I also handed out brochures at the Scandia Elementary
School Carnival and sent out several press releases to the Country Messenger and Forest Lake
Times. The city website was also used to promote classes and send out email blasts. Lakes
International Language Academy also sent home the brochure in an email blast to all students.
A survey was emailed out to parents who had a child participate in a class over the summer. Eighteen
people responded (see results attached). There were lots of positive comments and also good
suggestions for next year, including:
• Sending out some kind of confirmation letter so parents know their registration was
received.
• Better communications as far as what kids need to bring the first day of camp.
• Being a little clearer on some of the class descriptions as far as what activities are
included and snacks.
I will be going over the survey results with Camp Lakamaga staff so we can offer an even better
program for 2011.

What did you find most beneficial about this class?
( liked the idea that it v,as close to home antl the basic premise of the activity -half day carrip.
The social aspect. Enjoying outside activities.
close to home and outside!!I!Illf
peer interaction in nature with caring, trusted adults
fUfy son had a blastl He really enjoyed the teachers enYhusiasn.
It was a good fnst camp experience for him vi#haufi the fear af ovemight and it was c(ose to home
"hey learred how to use a GPS
Great setting (Camp Lakamaga) and lots of opportunities fo try new thingsl
The timing v✓as perfect - I v,ras able to get fo work and back. 1 would not have enrol{ed my 3 kids if
itnaas a shorter day because of day care issues.
The teacher was great with the kids.
hours, price, convenience
How can the class be improved?
Better communication. The flyer said snacks were provlded and they weren't, found outvhich
materials to bring to the day camp on the first day (shou{d have been sooner), councilers didn`#
seem all that enthusiastic about being there; changes in schedule were not sent out until it was
too late. F,II in ail, much better communication would have been very helpful.
Better cornmunication aboui hov to prepare for the activities What to bring each day/what to
pack.
better changing rooms
more time canoing and kayaking
The class seemed to be directed by the chilren. That is a great thing, it made the kids very
happy which is the most important thingll But it might hae more of a team atmosphere if there
was an actual pfan for the day or schedule of events.
reducing the numbee of kids in the class
Be more specific in ciescription of the class IE saying thaf afl the activities VVILL be Yaking piace
when in reality they are not done for the half day kids. y son was disappointed that some of the

there was no snack at ail so i sent a snack vJith him and they would not let him eat it.
They thought itnras to easy - maybe a litfle harder for oldeikids
Please let campers know vhat to bring (bug spray, sun screen, tennis shoes only) to be better
prepared.
Maybe split the age groups further. 1-3 and 4th -6th
ft seemed very disorganized.
Class enas to have snacks provided...they were not. No explanation given at the time.
Sometimes if seemed the kis jus; ran around aimiPssfy. lew games?

! don't think my son had much fime to hike, and explore.
Class Instructor Comments:
fhy child dici not seer al 'that ir,terested ir? going hack after the first day and tht is nigh(y
unusual.
! never met the instructor
FLIPPER WAS AMAZiNG!!i!'I!!!!!
I realiy appreciate tht before the last class, the teacher who couldn't be there the fast day made
a note for the next feacher tha4 she had promised to play baseball to some of the kids.
Felt that ane of the °instructors"ivas not a very gooc! person to have with my chiid, feit
uncomforfable with her.
My kids sa+8 every day thaf it wa really fun except the teacher was grumpy. fVly daughter did not
want to go after the first day because she vas one of on6 2 girfs and the other v,as much
younger.
loved them.
What other classes would you ike to see offered in the future?
An ail day camp for younger crowcis.
After-school activities.
sailing, kayaking, canoeing, etc.
Core sports samp4er classes like little c{eat kids
/ ,
ksl.etbali
Seemed pretty unorganized perhaps they could be a bit more organized in the future.
Archery only.
Art classesnhich are not so expensive
N(ore spy camps - my kids missed that this year but reaily wanted to go.
Additional comments, suggestions or ideas:
Get the nrorci out` /y chifdren do nct atten Scan?ia Elmenary an ve d not get the
messenger The brochure with the summer cfasses is necessary for us to get.
One of the counselors (the afore mentianed ane) fried to steai my sons very expensive sun
screen. He is sensitive to chemicais so he has special snscreen ft was missingvhen he came
home one day, ! dumped his bag out and vvent through his sfuff as i did every day and it was
OT in the bag. The next day f asked her ii he had leff his sunscreen there and she without
missing a beat said "NO havent seen it, oh and he had the good expensive stuff too!" I said yes
he does because he has special needs ana cannot hae the chemicals on his skin. I aiso asked
her to piease see if they could find it. When I picked Iim up she said they found it in the battom of
his bag. i KtOW itas not there and she just thought i irouldn4 notice it until camp was aver.
She vas lying. lheir staff should be more carefl(y chasen.
(Send out the survey sooner ...I'il remember better.)
( loved that the camp was offered a little later in the season.
Due to an injury he miss the class and was very dissapointed.. he can't wait until next year..
The weather was exceptionaily hot and there were no fans brought in. The classas started 45
min late because the instructar waited at the parking lot for one last child -while the other three
sat with her waiting.
Loved the camp, we wiil be back next yearl
