Re: Vinterfest 2015 Theme - "Sami"
Background:
Greg Zauner and I met with Pam Arnold to discuss preliminary Vinterfest 2015 planning. Arnold
proposed an appropriate theme for Vinterfest 2015 might be "Sami" (Northern Scandinavian reindeer
herders). The Sami people (also Sami or Saami), are the indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the
Artie area of Sapmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Kola
Peninsula of Russia, and the border area between south and middle Sweden and Norway. Their best-
known means of livelihood is semi -nomadic reindeer herding.
The Parks and Recreation Committee met on September 8 and approved the proposed theme.
Issue:
Should the "Sami" theme be approved for Vinterfest 2015?
Proposal Details:
The Parks and Recreation Committee is recommending approval of the "Sami" theme. This theme could
be incorporated in the events offered at Vinterfest, which could include a button design contest for sixth
graders at Scandia Elementary if approved by the PTO and principal of Scandia Elementary as well as a
reindeer petting zoo. The theme could also be used as guidelines for the snow sculpture contest and be
incorporated in the questions for the Quiz Promenade.
