5. maint worker PT PARKS GROUNDS MAINT Page 1 of 2 Printed 9/25/2014 Approved by City Council, April 7, 2009 Amended by City Council, October 21, 2014 City of Scandia, Minnesota POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: PARKS AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER, TEMPORARY SEASONAL STATUS: Temporary seasonal (Part-Time, 24 to 40 28 hours/week, up to 67 work days) position Normal working hours, per personnel policy Some weekends (mainly winter months) Subject to emergency call-out or off-hour work assignments FLSA Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Maintenance SupervisorPublic Works Director City Administrator City Council PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Under direction of full-time maintenance staff, perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks necessary to the seasonal maintenance of grounds, equipment and buildings at city parks and municipal buildings. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs landscaping functions such as mowing turf and trimming around trees, fences, buildings and paved areas. 2. Operates and performs simple maintenance on equipment such as riding or walk-behind lawn mowers and , weed whips, and Zamboni. 3. Removes litter and garbage and handles recyclables. 4. Prepares facilities for recreational use, such as dragging ball fields, flooding ice rinks to create and maintain skating surfaces on the hockey and pleasure rinks and removing major snow accumulations from ice surfaces by appropriate means. 5. Plow snow, and sand and de-ice roads, as needed during snow storms or emergency situations. 6. Assist with clearing, trimming and mowing for road rights-of-way as needed. 7. Inspect ice surfaces, hockey boards and lights on a regular basis to ensure they are in safe condition for use. 8. Make repairs to hockey rink boards, gates and nets. 9. Coordinate maintenance of facilities and equipment with the Skating Supervisor and the Public Works Director. 4.10. Attend safety meetings and other training as required. 6.12. Performs other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Ability to operate assigned equipment. 2. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. 3. Knowledge of park and landscape maintenance practices. 4. Building maintenance skills. 2.5. Mechanical aptitude. 3.6. Ability to do some lifting, bending, climbing, reaching, overhead pushing and pulling. 4.7. Agility to perform job responsibilities outdoors in climatic extremes, including in cold weather conditions on an irregular schedule dependent upon climate and ice conditions EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA: 1. Maintenance workers perform as a team to accomplish objectives. 1.2. Mowing and trimming are completed on a weekly basis, more or less frequently if weather conditions dictate. 3. Facilities and equipment are maintained in a neat, clean and orderly manner at all times. 4. Ice surfaces are maintained in a smooth, safe skating condition for the maximum time allowed by climate conditions during the ice skating season. 2.5. Hockey boards and other components are free of hazards and maintained in the best condition allowed given the age and type of materials. 3.6. Equipment is utilized appropriately, effectively and safely. 4.7. Communicates with staff and citizens in a polite and courteous manner. 5.8. Keeps supervisor informed of all significant matters he/she must know to perform his/her responsibilities effectively. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be 18 years of age or older. 2. Valid class “D” driver’s license and good driving record. 3. Must be able to physically perform functions of the position including lifting or moving up to 50 pounds occasionally. 4. Previous experience with grounds maintenance is desirable. SUPERVISION OF OTHERS: None
