7.a)1) Staff Report-Scanley Cup ProceedsSTAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: October 21, 2014 To: City Council From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Scanley Cup 2015 Proceeds Background: On January 31, and February 1, 2014, Roberts Family Funeral Home hosted the inaugural Scanley Cup adult hockey tournament during the annual Vinterfest community celebration. The Scanley Cup resulted in net financial proceeds of $1,000 donated to the Wojtowicz skating rink. Corey Roberts attended the October 6, 2014 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting and shared suggestions to enhance the 2015 Scanley Cup tournament. Roberts suggested the fundraising proceeds benefit the Scandia Veteran's Memorial. The Parks and Recreation Committee agreed it would be willing to close the ice rink to the public to accommodate the hockey tournament if some of the net proceeds would benefit the ice rink. Issue: Should the City Council approve to split the net proceeds of the Scanley Cup hockey tournament with half going to the City (for ice rink maintenance) and half going to Roberts (for any Scandia community cause of choice)? Proposal Details: The City Attorney has advised staff that the City can split the proceeds between the City and a non-profit cause and agreed to draft the agreement. The Parks and Recreation Committee is recommending half of the proceeds be split to benefit the ice rink and half would benefit any cause of Roberts' choice. Roberts agreed to pay City employees to maintain the rink during the hockey tournament, and any related costs, with the balance of the net proceeds to go half to the City and half to a cause of Roberts' choice. Fiscal Impact: The amount of proceeds from the Scanley Cup hockey tournament fundraiser is unknown at this time. Options: 1) Recommend net proceeds from the Scanley Cup adult hockey tournament be split 50-50 between the City to benefit the ice rink and Roberts to benefit a cause of his choice and direct City Attorney to prepare the agreement. 2) Recommend net proceeds be split differently between the City and Roberts. 3) Recommend all net proceeds benefit the Wojtowicz skating rink. 4) Recommend all net proceeds benefit Roberts' cause of choice. Recommendation: Option 1, 2, or 3.
