7.a)3) Staff Report-Skating Programs FlyerSCANLl_A STAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: November 18, 2014 To: City Council From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Winter Skating Programs Flyer Background Last year, we offered two skating program classes: Pleasure Skating (K -6th grade) and a new Learn to Skate program. The Pleasure Skating class was held with 15 registered students. The cost of the class was $25 for the six-week program. As in past years, Matt Rasmussen and Dana Wojtowicz volunteered to teach the class. Both Rasmussen and Wojtowicz are offering to supervise the program again this year. The Learn to Skate program was held with 30 registered students. The cost of the class was $59 for the six-week program with 80 percent of the registration fees going to the instructor, Kathryn (Katy) Herman. At the October 6, 2014 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee, members recommended to offer a new Vinterfest 2015 Ice Performance program in addition to last year's programs. Issue Should the City Council approve the winter programs and the distribution of the Scandia Parks and Recreation Skating Programs flyer for the 2015 season? Proposal Details In addition to the Pleasure Skating program and the Learn to Skate program offered last year, the Parks and Recreation Committee is recommending Herman teach a structured Sami- themed Vinterfest 2015 Ice Performance program. The class would run from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. one day a week for five weeks at a cost of $49. Herman would receive 80 percent of the registration fees. The Parks and Recreation Committee is recommending the remaining 20 percent of the registration fees be used for Vinterfest expenses. If possible, cancellations due to inclement weather or poor ice conditions could be rescheduled. Options 1. Approve the recommended skating programs and the skating programs flyer. 2. Amend and then approve the skating programs flyer. 3. Do not approve the skating programs or the skating programs flyer. Recommendation Option 1.
