SCANDIA GOOD NEIGHBOR AWARD PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, respecting and caring for others is a hallmark of the American character, and
central to how we as a community live; and
WHEREAS, respect and care for and from neighbors creates a more sustainable, resilient
community and makes Scandia a great place to live and be; and
WHEREAS, Scandia throughout its history has been the beneficiary of being a community of
Good Neighbors; and
WHEREAS, being a Good Neighbor increases the well-being of individuals and of the
community in which they live; and
WHEREAS, the Craig Mattson Farm took significant action to care for and improve the
environment of Scandia and surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, when the Comfort Lake Forest Lake Watershed District approached the Craig
Mattson Farm about doing a restoration project to help retain the phosphorus that had built
up on their farm from run-off into the surrounding wetlands, Moody Lake, and Bone Lake,
Mattson embraced the idea; and
WHEREAS, following their action, tests confirmed the Mattson wetland excavation single-
handedly achieved a 60 percent reduction in nutrient loading to Moody Lake. Both Moody
Lake and Bone Lake became noticeably cleaner. Tests indicate that Bone Lake's phosphorus
levels are the lowest in 20 years; and
WHEREAS, the Craig Mattson Farm has in these ways demonstrated the qualities of being a
Good Neighbor and has been nominated by the Bone Lake Association
to receive this Award
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Scandia presents the Scandia Good
Neighbor Award to the Craig Mattson Farm, in recognition and appreciation.
