The regular annual meeting to consider applications for renewal
of mining permits was held by the Town Board of New Scandia
Township on January 29, 1991. Present were supervisors
Nickelson, Pratt, Jackson, Nordin and Ostlund.
Public Hearings on each application were conducted by the
New Scandia Planning Commission.
Bracht Pit
Laurie Morris, adjacent land owner, expressed concern about
the lack of trees for screening and piles of dirt which were
being placed to her boundary line.
She was advised that trees were planted but that evergreens would
not grow in the soil along the edge of the gravel pit. The dirt
was being placed along the boundary to create a berm. The
Planning Commission recommended to the Town Board the renewal
of the mining permit for an additional year. Ostlund made a
motion to accept the Planning Board's recommendation, Nordin
seconded and motion adopted.
Barton Pit
Gary Sauer representing the Barton Pit outlined the restoration
that had occurred in the pit for the past year. Sue Touomi
asked whether anything could be done to keep people from
going into the pit from the North end. She was advised that
fences were in place but had been cut.
Planning Commission recommends to the Town Board to renew the
mining permit for an additional year. Pratt made_ a motion
to accept the Planning Commission recommendation, Nickelson
seconded and adopted.
Dresel Pit
Bruce Dresel outlined the restoration which had been done in
the pit during the past year.
The Planning Commission recommends to the Town Board the mining
permit for Dresel Pit be renewed for an additional year. Nordin
made a motion to accept, Ostlund seconded and adopted.
Nordin Pit
Sandra Johnson inquired whether bonds were being required of all
the pits. The Planning Commission advised her that no bond was
being required in the Nordin or Lindgren Pits because minimal

mining activity was taking place and it appeared that restoration
could occur without the requirement of a bond.
The Planning Commission recommend sto the Town Board to renew
the Nordin mining permit for an additional year. Nickelson
made a motion to accept the Planning Commission recommendation,
Pratt seconded the motion and the motion passed with Nordin
abstaining.
Lindgren Pit
Planning Commission was advised by George Lindgren that minimal
mining activity would occur and that it would consist primarily
of removal of stock piles.
Planning Commission recommends to the Town Board the renewal
of the mining permit for an additional year. Ostlund made
a motion to accept the Planning Commission's recommendation,
Nickelson seconded the motion and adopted.
Chairman Duane Thompson of the Planning Commission remarked
that there had been very substanial improvement in the
mining operations in the past several years and credited the
citizens in having a hand in the improvements which have
occurred.
