On the above date New Scandia Town Board held a Public
Improvement Hearing for Lofton/Maryberry. The following Board
Members were present: Chairman, Charles Nordin, Edith Hadlich,
Kevin Nickelson, Paul Rasmussen and Duane Thompson.
Mr Tom Prew informed the public that the township had received
$50,000.00 in funds from the Department of Natural Resources
due the boat access on Big Marine Lake. Mr Prew stated that
Lofton and Mayberry do not have to be upgraded and the bituminous
surfacing is estimated at approximately $140,000.00. There are
fifty six assessable units.and the cost would be $402.00 per
parcel. There are nine and one half units in Ag Preserve.
Mr Paul Methven was concerned about drainage on his property and
felt there would be more runoff on his property with the
bituminous surfacing. Mr Prew informed Mr Methven that he had
viewed the problem, but he would make another site visit.
Mr Theodore Hoxmeier expressed his concern about a speed limit on
Lofton and Mayberry and felt the bituminous surfacing would make
the area unsafe do to high speed and the amount of parking boats
and boat trailers on Mayberry. Most residents at the public
hearing were in agreement with Mr Hoxmeier.
Letters from Robert P Liesch, Shirley R Liesch and Robert J
Johnston were read into the minutes opposing the bituminous
surfacing.
The residents questioned the town board why they were considering
bituminous surfacing of Lofton/Mayberry when residents in other
areas had petitioned to have the roads bituminous surfaced and
these roads where not on the projects. Mr Thompson informed the
residents that Lofton/Mayberry required high maintenance and has
a very high traffic count.
The board asked for a show of hands who wanted the bituminous
surfacing on Lofton/Mayberry and no one raised their hands.
Kevin Nickelson made a motion to table the public hearing and
directed the town clerk and engineer to review the possibility of
a speed limit from the State of Minnesota and the parking
situation near the public access from the Department of Natural
Resources. Motion passed unanimously.
Paul Rasmussen made a motion to adjourn. Edith Hadlich seconded
the motion and motion passed unanimously.
